چکیده

Stereotypes can harm human performance, especially when activated in individuals with diminished working memory capacity (WMC). Performance implications for the stereotype of poor driving in older adults were investigated. Using a sample of older adults, WMC (the ability to maintain task goals and ignore distractions) and driving performance [brake reaction time (RT), following distance, and crashes] were assessed, the latter using a high-fidelity simulator. Elderly participants under stereotype threat with reduced WMC exhibited slower brake RTs and longer following distances compared with a control condition that was not threatened. This driving profile was characteristic of cognitive distraction. Stereotype threat has clear consequences for human performance in a common real-world task—driving—that is critical to public safety. Furthermore, these findings suggest caution in how the media and public policy communicate information about older adult driving. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Stereotype Threat Lowers Older Adults' Self-Reported Hearing Abilities.

BACKGROUND Although stereotype threat is a well-documented phenomenon, previous studies examining it in older adults have almost exclusively focused on objective cognitive outcomes. Considerably less attention has been paid to the impact of stereotype threat on older adults' subjective assessments of their own abilities or to the impact of stereotype threat in noncognitive domains. OBJECTIVE ...

Running head: STEREOTYPE THREAT REDUCES MEMORY ERRORS Stereotype threat can reduce older adults’ memory errors

144 words) Stereotype threat often incurs the cost of reducing the amount of information that older adults accurately recall. In the current research we tested whether stereotype threat can also benefit memory. According to the regulatory focus account of stereotype threat, threat induces a prevention focus in which people become concerned with avoiding errors of commission and are sensitive to...

Stereotype threat increases the likelihood that female drivers in a simulator run over jaywalkers.

Stereotype threat, or the belief that one may be the target of demeaning stereotypes, leads to performance disruptions in a variety of domains. Two experiments conducted in a driving simulator demonstrate that stereotype threat also disrupts control of an automobile. Women who were reminded of the stereotype that females are poor drivers were more than twice as likely to collide with jaywalking...

Age Differences in Cortical Recruitment to Stereotype Threat and Resiliency for Self-Referenced Information

We investigated neural basis of stereotype threat and resiliency, and differences across age groups. Young and older adults judged whether words stereotypical of aging (e.g., frail, wise) and control words (e.g., friendly) described them while being scanned with fMRI. Judging stereotype words versus control words revealed higher activations in regions associated with self-referencing for older ...
